NAVIER, Claude Louis Marie Henri (1785--1836)
xxiv, 228 p., XIII fold. pl. ; 28.5 cm. (4º)

Navier was the first to develop a theory of suspension bridges which before then had been built to empirical principles; he is remembered today chiefly for his contributions to the mathematical theory of elasticity and fluid mechanics.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting half-title. A copy of 'Navier Memoire sur les Ponts Suspendus 4to. & Atlas folio of plates' was bought from the Weale catalogue, 1830 for £2 12s. 6d. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.10). However, no such atlas folio survives in Soane's library, and it seems more likely that the Weale bill may refer to a copy of the 1830 edition of Navier's Mémoire, and that the present copy was in Soane's possession by 23 September 1825, when a copy of 'Navarin [sic] sur Ponts Suspendus Qto' was bound by (and possibly purchased from) the booksellers T. & W. Boone at the same time as three other works (Spiers Box); no work on bridges by 'Navarin' is recorded by the Bibliothèque nationale de France.

Binding C19th 'catspaw' mottled calf, gilt triple-rule borders, gilt thick-thin and double-rule spine, green morocco spine-label, marbled edges. Possibly bound by Thomas Boone, 25 September 1825; see above.

Reference Number 2866

Additional Names T. & W.$Boone; Weale; Becquey, Francois Louis (1760--1849)
