With a list of subscribers including Soane (2 copies). The 'Note' preceding the lectures is signed: 'P. Hoare' i.e. Prince Hoare. Opie was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1788. He delivered his four lectures as professor of painting between 16 February and 9 March 1807; a month later, on 9 April 1807, he died. The present volume includes a reprint of the seventh issue of Prince Hoare's magazine The Artist (25 April 1807) which had been entirely devoted to the tributes of Opie's friends and fellow artists.

Copy Notes Copy 1: Pasted in on the front free-endpaper is a single sheet of printed proposals with John Soane's subscription receipts for two copies (at one guinea each), that for the second copy inscribed in ink on the verso and dated June 16 1809. Both receipts are signed by Prince Hoare, Opie's close friend, who evidently encouraged and organized the publication and to whom it is dedicated by Mrs Amelia Opie.
