Plate dated 21 June 1817. Originally published in Paris 1812 as Essai sur les mystères d'Eleusis; 2nd edition 1815. The 3rd edition, by A. I. Silvestre de Sacy, Paris 1816 was the model for the English translation.
Copy Notes It was most likely this small volume that accompanied James Christie's letter of presentation to Soane which is dated 6 Aug. 1817 and is mistakenly pasted in Christie's Essay on that earliest species of idolatry, the worship of the elements, 1814 (q.v.).
Binding C19th half calf, gilt double-rule spine, black spine-label. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 1s. 8d., 23 June 1829. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.6.29).
