Translation from a work originally published in French in 1694, which also included a translation of Domenico Martinelli's Horologi elementari. The author intended these 'recreations' as a supplement to his Cours de mathématique (1693, second edition 1697, q.v.). Jacques Ozanam was a prolific author of mathematical treatises including the standard French explication of Euclid's 'elements' of the late seventeenth century, an important work on perspective, and a successful mathematical dictionary (q.v.). Pages 129 to 192 are omitted from the numeration, and I--N from the register. There are 2 different plates numbered 24 and 2 numbered 25. The final [4] pages contain the publishers' proposals for printing Ozanam's 'Whole Course of the Mathematicks, In Five Volumes, in Octavo...' and for reprinting The gentleman's recreations and Guillim's Heraldry, as well as their list of newly printed books.
