Palladio, Andrea (1508--1580). Fabbriche antiche'
[Le terme dei Romani disegnate da Andrea Palladio. French]
Les thermes des Romains dessinées par André Palladio et publiées de nouveau ... par Octave Bertotti Scamozzi ...
Vicence (Place), chez François Modena,, 1785.
35, [1] p., add. engr. title-pl., XXV pl. ; 47.5 cm. (2º)

Published simultaneously in Italian and French editions, which were apparently available separately as here, or issued together (q.v.). The plates, drawn by Carlo Barrera and engraved by Gaetano Testolini, were copied from Burlington's edition (dated 1730, not 1732 as stated in the title here, but in fact probably not issued until around 1735, q.v.) with some measurements added and an additional plate of the plan of the baths of Agrippa not in Burlington's edition. The work is often erroneously considered as a continuation of Bertotti Scamozzi's edition of Le fabbriche e i disegni di Andrea Palladio, 1776--1783 (q.v.), likewise published simultaneously in French and Italian editions. See BAL, Early printed books, no. 2380 (French only); C.I.S.A. Andrea Palladio, La raccolta palladiana Guglielmo Cappelletti del Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio di Vicenza (Vicenza 2001), no. 29 (Italian only); Fowler 234 (French and Italian).

Copy Notes A copy of the present work in Italian and/or French was presumably purchased from Priestley and Weale as the fifth volume of a set of 'Palladio 5 t.' with an unidentified edition of Bertotti Scamozzi's edition of Le fabbriche e i disegni di Andrea Palladio for 13 guineas on 24 May 1826, but neither can be securely identified with the two copies of each in the Soane Museum. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.6.9).

Binding C18th stained marbled sheep, thin-thick-thin gilt-rule borders, gilt-tooled spine with floral ornament, red morocco spine-label.

Reference Number 2941
