A resetting (almost line for line) of the 1570 edition (q.v.), using the same woodcut title-pages and illustrations, but with new woodcut initials; publication of the new edition was no doubt prompted by Palladio's death in 1580, with the additional books promised in the first edition still uncompleted. Book I pp. 40--41 misnumbered 42--43; book II p. 39 misnumbered 30; book IV p. 57 misnumbered 55, pp. 97 and 104 transposed. Carampello's device used above the colophon p. [134] is copied from the cartouche on Franceschi's 1570 title-page. See BAL, Early printed books, no. 2384; Fowler 213; C.I.S.A. Andrea Palladio, La raccolta palladiana Guglielmo Cappelletti del Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio di Vicenza (Vicenza 2001), no. 107.

Copy Notes Copy 1: Inscribed in ink by Soane on front pastedown Mr. Adam's Sale/ May 1818, but not in the catalogue of the Adam Sale. However, it is included in Soane's list of books 'At Mr Adams Sale May 1818' as 5 --- fol. Palladio Venice 1581 and was evidently bought with four other books. (Priv. Corr.XVI.E.3). The Adam provenance together with the vellum binding with green fore-edges suggest a possible connection with the C17th Italian art patron and collector Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588--1657), volumes from whose library were often bound in a similar way; six volumes of drawings in the Soane Museum share this provenance. See Ian Campbell, 'The Dal Pozzo holdings in architecture and topography: drawings, prints and printed books', in Ian Campbell, The Paper Museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo. Series A, pt 9: Ancient Roman topography and architecture, vol. 1 (London 2004), pp. 37--52. However, the English spine-title may argue against this attribution. Two small excisions on title-page, one apparently removing a circular stamp, with possibly contemporary repairs. With a pencil sketch by Robert Adam of a church on the rear free-endpaper. Front free-endpaper inscribed in pencil (incorrectly) first Edition 1573.
Copy 2: 31.7 cm. This copy has the book II misnumbering of p. 39 corrected. The title to book I, the final three leaves to book IV and the dedication to book I (sig. A2) repaired, the latter misbound to follow p. 12 (leaf B4). Front pastedown inscribed in ink with price £. 1. (or possibly library shelfmark L.1.); an inscription has been vigorously rubbed out uncovering the board. Front free-endpaper inscribed in pencil oxy muriatic acid and with bookseller's code. Title-plate inscribed in pencil 1815/1581/234 i.e. the book's age in 1815.

Binding Copy 1: C17th(?) vellum, the spine inscribed in ink 'Palladio's Architecture'. Green fore-edges.
Copy 2: C17th vellum, red morocco spine-label gilt-lettered 'Archit. Di A. Pallad. Ven. 1581.'.
