A reprint of the first edition of 1570 with etched and engraved copperplate facsimiles of the original woodcut title-pages and illustrations. Published by Joseph Smith (1682--1770), British Consul at Venice at his Pasquali Press around 1767 and apparently distributed over the next few years. Page number on final recto [13] misaligned. Copy Notes Frederick Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry's copy, inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper From the Bishop of Derry, to J. Soane, at Rome / Octr. 1778-- [the final 'e' of Soane's name added by him after 1783]. This was one of Soane's earliest bibliophile acquisitions from his early patron in Italy, setting him on his course as a collector. With marginal translations of a few words on pages 2 and 3 of book I, in Soane's early hand.

Binding C18th hairsheep, front and rear covers with gilt-tooled arms of Bishop of Derry and gilt-tooled palmette and anthemion borders, floral corner-pieces, gilt-tooled spine direct-lettered in gilt, Italian block-printed decorated endpapers, gilt edges.
