PERCIER, Charles (1764--1838)
8, 3, [1], 40 p., 100 [i.e. 99] pl. ; 42.7 cm. (2°)

This issue includes a list of subscribers printed at the end of the text followed by a colophon identifying the printer as Baudouin It can be dated to before 1809 since the authors refer at the end of their 'Discours Préliminaire' to a forthcoming 'plus grand ouvrage auquel nous avons déjà consacré plusieurs années d'étude et de travail', by which they almost certainly mean their Choix des plus célèbre maisons de plaisance de Rome (Paris 1809, q.v.). Later issues omit this reference. The title-page of the Soane copy is the same as the British Library copy (647.c.2), but slightly different from BAL 2489. The plates were drawn in collaboration with Charles Louis Bernier; plates 12 and 13 are printed on one leaf. The 'Explication Des Planches', giving an historical account of the buildings and the names of their architects, was supplied by the architect and antiquarian, Léon Dufourny (1754--1818) who was in Rome with Percier and Fontaine during their Prix de Rome years, 1786--92. See BAL Early printed books, no. 2489.
