PEYRE, Marie-Joseph (1730--1788)
[Works. 1765]

With a dedication to the Marquis de Marigny. The purchase of Oeuvres d'architecture in 1780 inaugurated Soane's career as a serious collector of architectural books. Although Soane's purchase of the book occurred after the execution of his winning 1776 RA design for a Triumphal Bridge, it can be assumed that he was familiar with the book and the designs in it through his studies; du Prey, who suggests it was on Sandby's reading list for course of lectures, notes that the book was not in the RA library as inventoried in 1815 but that Chambers had a copy in his library. Soane made pencil marks in the margins of some pages of Peyre, but not in connection with this academy design. See P. de la Ruffinière du Prey, John Soane's architectural education (New York and London 1977), pp. 135-6; Margaret Richardson and MaryAnne Stevens (eds.), John Soane architect: master of space and light, exh. cat., Royal Academy of Arts (London 1999), cat. no. 11. BAL, Early printed books, no. 2510.

Soane 1780, the 'e' added later; on front paste-down Pd. for Soane 3 Gui: all but 3 Livres -; and with translations of a few terms in pencil in the margins of the text. Jombert senior died in 1784.
