Translation of the Roman engraver and publisher Tommaso Piroli's Le antichità di Ercolano, 6 vols, Rome 1789--1806, a collection of engraved plates each accompanied by descriptive text. Volumes I--III contain 'Peintures', with an 8-pp. index at the end of vol. III; vols IV--V 'Bronzes'; vol. VI 'Lampes Et Candélâbres'.
Copy Notes Imperfect; vol. I wanting plates XIV, XV; vol. III wanting plates XIV, XVI, XLVIII. Bought from Thomas Boone for £3 10s., 16 June 1818. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.3.9). Volume I inscribed in pencil on front paste-down endpaper with Boone's price 6 toms 3£=13s=6d and on rear pastedown with his code bmf.
Binding C19th brown calf, blind-tooled borders, blind and gilt-tooled spines, marbled edges.
