First edition: 1797. Volume III includes C. A. Dufresnoy's Art of painting translated into English verse by the Rev. William Mason together with Reynolds's commentary on it, as well as 'The Sentiments Of Charles Alphonse Du Fresnoy, On The Works Of The Principal And Best Painters Of The Last Two Ages'; and 'A Chronological List Of Painters, From The Revival Of The Art To The Beginning Of The Present Century', by Thomas Gray. With a frontispiece self-portrait of Reynolds stipple-engraved by Caroline Watson (1761--1814). ESTC t52793; Hilles 28.

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper John Soane/ 1804. With marginal notes in pencil to Malone's life of Reynolds.

Binding C18th tree calf, gilt-tooled spines with quiver, horn and stag's head motif, black spine-labels.
