RICHARDSON, George (1736?--1813?)
The new Vitruvius Britannicus; consisting of plans and elevations of modern buildings, public and private, erected in Great Britain by the most celebrated architects. Engraved on LXXII plates, from original drawings. By George Richardson, architect. [parallel title in French].
London (Place), printed by W. Bulmer and Co., for the author; and sold by J. Taylor,, 1802.
[2], iv, 20 p., 62 aquatint pl. (numbered I--LXXII); 57.3 cm. (2º)

Parallel title and text in French. Issued in 10 parts from 4 June 1796 to 26 December 1801, the dates given on the plates. The first eight parts were originally issued in wrappers bearing the title A collection of plans and elevations of modern buildings public and private; erected in Great Britain, by the most celebrated architects ... This work will be comprised in ten numbers, and will form a proper supplement to the Vitruvius Britannicus, and its continuation ..., each fascicle having the part number added in ink. An undated advertisement for the first four numbers is also in the Soane Museum (q.v.). The work was issued complete in one volume with the title-page dated 1802 with no indication that it would be continued, but the favourable public response led to the appearance of the first part of a second volume in November 1802, the fifth and final part being issued in mid-1807 with a title-page naming T. Bensley as the printer and dated 1808. Soane is listed as a subscriber for '2 Setts' of the first volume, and his work at Sydney Lodge in Hampshire is represented in pl. X. Despite evidence that he continued to subscribe to the second volume, supplying images of Pitzhanger Manor (pl. LVII--LIX), only the first is now in Soane's library (see copy notes). BAL, Early printed books, no. 2757; Millard II, 70.

Copy Notes References to 'Geo. Richardson for two numbers or copies of the first number of designs in Architecture' on 2 August 1796 (Ledger B, p. 208) and 'Paid G. Richardson for 2 copies of 1st no. of designs in Architecture', £1 1s. on 11 August (Journal 3, p. 161) most likely refer to Soane's purchase of two copies of the first part of this work; two further payments of £1 1s. were made on 15 May 1797 for '2 copies of the 2d No. of his new Work in Architecture' (Journal 3, p. 169) and on 30 December 1797 for '2 copies of No. 3 of his work' (Journal 4, p. 48). Josiah Taylor was paid £2 2s. for '2 Richardsons Vitruvius, no. 9, 10' on 21 July 1801. (Spiers Box). George Richardson was paid £1 1s. for the first part of the second volume on 30 December 1802 (Archives 7/2/21), and Josiah Taylor £1 1s. for the second part of vol. II in December 1802 (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.1.7), but no partial or complete copy of the second volume is now in the Soane Museum.
