First published in 1722 by J. Knapton. Jonathan Richardson senior, a painter and collector most influential through his writings, compiled the text from notes made by his son, Jonathan junior (1694--1771) during travels in Holland, France and Italy. The present edition of his most influential work is a reissue of the original sheets with the title-leaf and dedication cancelled and replaced with a new half-title and title-leaf bifolium. The half-title verso bears a list of books printed for D. Browne, J. Whiston and B. White. With two final pages of errata and a 'Postscript' of additional errata. ESTC t146824; BAL, Early printed books, no. 2761.

Copy Notes The half-title inscribed in ink 156 on either side of the author's name. Possibly sharing its provenance with the copy of Richardson's Essay on the theory of painting, 1715 (q.v.) with which this work is uniformly bound, and with one of the copies of his Two discourses, 1725 (q.v.), both having the title-pages similarly inscribed.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt double-rule borders, red morocco spine-label reading 'Richardson/ On/ Statues'. Bound uniformly as volume [1] with Richardson's Essay on the theory of painting, 1715.
