Edited by Patrick Murdoch (who signs the dedication), this quarto subscription edition of the collected works of James Thomson contains the first edition of Murdoch's 'An Account Of The Life and Writings of Mr. James Thomson', and the 'Ode On The Death of Mr. Thomson' by William Collins, both much reprinted in subsequent editions. The 'List of the Encouragers' in vol. I includes James Boswell, Benjamin Franklin, and David Garrick. The frontispiece portrait in vol. I is engraved by J. Basire after John Aikman, that in vol. II is by Basire after J. Paton; the plates in vol. I are chiefly by N.H. Tardieu after William Kent; others are by G.V. Neist after S. Wale; those in vol. II are by J. Miller and one by Neist after Wale. ESTC t39169.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt dogtooth roll-tooled borders, gilt-tooled spines with sunburst and corner rosettes within pentaglyph and lozenge borders, red and black morocco spine-labels, marbled endpapers.
