A reissue of the 1634 edition of Philemon Holland's translation of the Natural history of Pliny the Elder, first published in 1601 (q.v.); in the final 'Aduertisement' to the reader in lieu of the original edition's errata page it claims to be the second edition, with all errors corrected. Volume II has imprint: 'Printed by Adam Islip, 1634'. ESTC s103160.
Copy Notes Bound in one volume, wanting the initial and final blanks. Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper Decr. 7th. 1711 / I warrant this Book to be perfect / (tho' Stain'd) Witness my hand / Wm. Freeman/. Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper John Soane / 1801. The title-leaf is mounted on a backing leaf and pinned at head and foot to the dedication leaf.
Binding C17th reversed calf, blind double-ruled boards with additional double fillet parallel to spine, blind double-ruled spine, early paper spine-label, ink-lettered spine-title, later ink-lettered library shelf-label '38'. Upper free-endpaper (originally bifolium) is tipped onto a folded parchment stub made from an English deed dated seventh day of January in / the yeare of our Lord God one thousand six hundred Fifty Five; lower first free-endpaper (originally bifolium) followed by a folded paper stub bearing text in ink in Italian in more than one hand, including date 16 di Magg[io] 1585.
