168, [4], 103, [1] p. ; 19.1 cm. (8º)
Quatremère de Quincy, a prolific and influential writer on art and archaeology, came to prominence during the French Revolution, overseeing the transformation of the church of S. Geneviève into a mausoleum for national heroes (the Pantheon). In this work, influenced by Winckelmann, "he argued that the sole function of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture should be teaching, and that its members should cease to have a monopoly in respect of state commissions and of the right to exhibit works of art. The Considérations were influential in the decision made later that year that the right to exhibit at the Paris Salon should be open to all." (OCWA). The second part has a separate title-page reading: 'Suite Aux Considérations Sur Les Arts Du Dessin En France, Ou Réflexions critiques sur le projet de Statuts & Réglemens de la majorité de l'Académie de Peinture & Sculpture. ...', and the imprint of Desenne, libraire, 1791.
