Published in 1814. Many copies have the title-page postdated 1815 as here, to allow a dedication to Louis XVIII. This work was a pioneering study of the colossal chryselephantine cult statues of Pheidias and Greek polychromatic sculpture. BAL, Early printed books, no. 2683.

Copy Notes Inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper Very fine plates/ £12..12..0. A copy was offered to Soane on 2 June 1814 by John Weale, who claimed to have bought it from the author about two years earlier for £9 15s. and was prepared to sell it to Soane for that price, though 12 guineas was what he had asked in his catalogue. The author, he said, 'charges now very high prices for them', meaning the parts in which the work was issued. (Archive 16/12/71). With blue paper printed bookseller's label of Priestley and Weale pasted in on front paste-down endpaper.
