THE REJECTED PICTURES ...
The rejected pictures, &c. with descriptive sketches of the several compositions by some ci-devant and other cognoscenti: (being a supplement to the Royal Academy catalogue of 1815.) To which are added, a few of the secret reasons for their rejection, by a distinguished member of the Hanging Committee.

A satire on the preponderance of portraits in the Royal Academy exhibition in which the subjects of the pictures are lampooned rather than their authors, 'a rare and affecting modesty ... [having] prevented the addition of their names to this brief memorial of their suffering merit.' (p. v).

Copy Notes With an unsigned and undated MS. note inserted at the front apparently thanking Soane for the loan of the book and lamenting that nothing short of obscurity will secure one now from the shafts thrown by the Idle and the indigent .... Front free-endpaper inscribed in ink John Soane / 14 Sept: 1815 / 0/5/6. Inscribed in pencil on the title-page following the quotation '"The Devil finds mischief still, / For idle hands to do." yea thou wilt not want [unread word] / & Spanish proverb / "With witty malice studious to defame. The names of many of the subjects are inserted in the blanks or in the margins (some cropped) in ink or pencil. Bound first with a copy of John Britton's The rights of literature, 1814 (q.v.).

Binding C19th half green morocco, marbled paper boards, blind double-rule borders, gilt double-rule spine direct lettered in gilt with titles &c. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 1s., 2 August 1830. (Spiers Box. Binding 51). Later numbered '68' in a series of pamphlet volumes.
