London (Place), J. Smeeton, printer,, [1801].
12 p. ; 28.4 cm. (4º)

Lugt 6258; J. Blogie, Répertoire des catalogues III (1988), p. . Soane bought heavily at the first day of this sale, acquiring not only Reveley's important collection of architectural casts en bloc for £21 (possibly by private treaty before the sale), but also a number of major architectural books from his library, notably Desgodetz's Les édifices antiques de Rome, 1779 (q.v.), Fontana's L'Anfiteatro Flavio, 1725 (q.v.), Newton's English translation of Vitruvius, 1791 (q.v.), and the second edition of Le Roy's Les ruines des plus beaux monuments de la Grece, 1770 (q.v.). Soane's other purchases included a folio album of Reveley's 'Tracings and Drawings of Architectural Ornaments' (Vol. 31), a 'Model of a Pile Engine' (lot 129, SM Inv. MR80) and a (probably plaster) bust of Inigo Jones (i.e. SM Inv. SDR8). Reveley's large collection of architectural, topographical and archaeological drawings, recording his tour in Italy, Greece and Egypt in 1785--86, seems to have been of no interest to Soane - none of the prices of the latter are marked in this copy of the catalogue, which has nearly all other prices for both days inscribed in pencil. Soane's purchases are indicated by an S and the price added in ink. In addition, the description of lots 54--70 has been annotated in pencil with a series of numbers, grouping the casts according to the lots in which they had been sold and corresponding, perhaps, with numbers marked at one time on the objects themselves. Such, at least, seems to be suggested by a further annotation of the final page, which is inscribed in pencil NB The Architrave of the / Temple of Jupiter Tonans / is marked No.14 & the Cornice / is marked No.13 = the / Arch: should be marked 13 / No.13 Architrave of J.T. / 16 Cornice of J.T. / 17 Cornice of J.T. See also MS. list of lot numbers and prices. (Spiers Box, Memoranda re Purchases).
