Hilles 4 (this copy not recorded). This is the second discourse. Reynolds's first discourse, the original edition of which Soane apparently never acquired, had been delivered at the official opening of the Academy on 2 January 1769. The half-title with price '1s. 6d.' ESTC t31950.

Copy Notes Bound (2) in volume lettered on spine 'Discourses / of / Sir J. / Reynolds / 1769 / To / 1776', the front free-endpaper inscribed in ink From the Author to P. Sandby.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-ruled spine, later black morocco spine-label with evidence of earlier direct lettering beneath. Edwin Hutchinson did some work on the binding costing a total of 4s. 3d. on 2 August 1831 (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.16 Bookbinding).
