Little is known about Giovanni Campani, who wrote under the name of Cesare Ripa. The first French translation of the most famous of all iconologies (first published in Rome in 1593) appeared in 1637. The engraved title to pt. 1 reads: 'Iconologie Ov Les Principales Choses ... Grauées en cuiure Par Iacqves De Bie, Et moralement expliquees Par I. Bavdoin.' Both engraved titles are dated Paris, 1643. The four unnumbered leaves following Pt. 2 p. 104 are a gathering of two bifolia, the first leaf signed N4.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the part half-titles with engraved illustrations on the verso. Bought from Thomas Boone for 5s. on 9 June 1806. (Spiers Box). Inscribed by Boone in pencil on front free-endpaper -5s-/ Many plates. With a small loosely inserted sheet containing a partial English translation in pencil of the text concerning 'Égalité', pt. 1, p. 54.

Binding Contemporary C17th vellum, lacking ties, the spine lettered in ink 'Exp/ des Images'.
