The publishing history of this vast and influential encyclopedia of building history, techniques and costs is obscure; a first edition of volumes I--III may have appeared in parts as early as 1802--5, part 1 of vol. IV by 1810 and part 2 of vol. IV in 1814, with the first three volumes apparently being reprinted in 1812--14 and the two parts of vol. IV reprinted in 1818. The BAL catalogue entry suggests that vol. V may not have appeared until 1816--17 in two parts continuously paginated, being also reprinted in 1818; volumes IV--V of the present copy are undated and presumably issued between 1819 and 1827, in which year the 'Cinquième Édition' commenced publication. The plates were originally issued with the volumes and afterwards bound separately. Thus no 'ideal' copy of the early editions of the Traité seems to exist, with most sets being collected together from whichever editions were available. See BAL, Early printed books, no. 2838.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting plates CLXXVIII--CLXXIX, and the half-titles to the text volumes. Bought from Priestley and Weale for £6. 16s. 6d. on 24 May 1826. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.6.9).

Binding C19th diced russia, gilt roll-tooled borders, gilt-ruled spines, black morocco spine-labels. Bound by E. Hutchinson for £2, with guards to plates 3s., on 6 June 1829. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.6.29). Bound to match the copy of Rondelet's Mémoire historique sur le dôme du Panthéon français, 1814 (q.v).
