ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS, London
[School Laws. 1797]
Royal Academy. Laws and regulations for the students. Rules and orders of the schools and library. And for the exhibition.
London (Place), [1797].
13, [3] p. ; 20.3 cm. (8°)

The final leaf is blank. Although almost certainly printed at the same time as the 1797 edition of the Abstract of the instrument of institution and laws of the Royal Academy of Arts in London (q.v.), this section of the laws of the Academy was clearly intended for separate distribution amongst the students and exhibitors. The third paragraph on p. 4 is a cancel pasted over the original text.

Copy Notes Copy 1: Bound (2) as issued with the Abstract of the instrument of institution and laws ... (q.v.). Interleaved and annotated in MS. with a fair copy of the questions put to, and the legal opinions given by the Attorney General, Spencer Perceval, at the time of the Academy's constitutional crisis of 1803. (A similar copy, interleaved with the Attorney General's autograph replies, is preserved in the Royal Academy's archives.)
Copy 2: 19.9 cm. This copy lacks the cancel slip on p. 4; the original text reads 'When confirmed Students, they shall enjoy the free entrance of the Academy for life, with free admission likewise to the Exhibition for seven years, but no longer.' Bound (2) as issued with the Abstract of the instrument of institution and laws ... (q.v.). The front free-endpaper of the volume is inscribed in pencil 1866-1896, indicating that it was found in one of three repositories containing correspondence, miscellaneous papers and objects, sealed by Soane in November 1836 with directions that they should be opened on 22 November (the anniversary of his wife's death) in 1866, 1886 and 1896 respectively.

Binding Copy 1: Late C18th half sheep, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-ruled spine, black morocco spine label lettered in gilt 'Laws Of The Royal Academy'.
Copy 2: Early C19th quarter sheep, marbled-paper boards, gilt-ruled spine. Bound by Peter Low for 2s., April 1806. (Spiers Box).
