The Belfast Academical Institution was founded in 1810 and incorporated in 1815; An account of the system of education in the Belfast Academical Institution was published in 1818. Adam McClean had written to Soane on 25 April 1808 on behalf of the newly formed Management Committee of the projected Institution, and Soane replied on the 27th undertaking to prepare designs, but he was not acquainted with the financial situation and the plans had to be considerably scaled down. By 19 July 1809 Soane was able to write that the less ambitious designs were ready, and on 25 July he was made an Honorary Member of the Institution. (See Hugh Dixon, Soane and the Belfast Academical Institution, Gatherum series 8, Dublin 1976.) The Soane Museum has 43 drawings relating to this project (Drawer 71/5/1--41 & 43; Vol. 90/5); for the correspondence relating to it, see Priv. Corr. V.F.1--37.
Copy Notes A letter to Soane from Adam McClean, dated from Belfast 20 February 1833, presenting him with this volume, is pasted down on front free-endpaper. The Royal Belfast Academical Institution holds a presentation copy of Soane's unpublished Designs for public and private buildings, dated 10 November 1832. (See Royal Belfast Academical Institution, Centenary volume 1810--1910, Belfast 1913, p. 45).
Binding C19th half maroon sheep, gilt roll-tooled borders, gilt-tooled spine, marbled-paper boards, gilt edges.
