Anonymous. First published in 1789; the work's popular appeal led to further editions in 1794, 1810 and 1821 as well as the present edition, and it is frequently listed in Taylor's Architectural Library catalogues. Also sometimes found bound with Essays on Gothic architecture, 1802 (q.v.). The plates numbered [1] (frontis.), 2--4, 4*, 5--10. The title-page with a vignette portrait of James 'Athenian' Stuart engraved by Basire.
