Anonymous. A young painter = James Russel. Former attributions have included Sir Joshua Reynolds and John Russell (1711--1804). ESTC states: Author positively identified as James Russell by Ralph Edwards, Burlington Magazine XCIII, April 1951, p.126 (as also Ingamells). The letters describing antiquities at Rome, Herculaneum, and other sites were written between 1739 and 1745 and were evidently first issued in numbers. Soane also owned a copy of the second edition, 1750 (q.v.). ESTC t122509.

Copy Notes The plates in this copy are hand coloured. A copy, edition unspecified, was bought from T. Boone for 1s. 6d. on 15 May 1804. (Archive 7/13/5).

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt double-rule borders, gilt-tooled spine, red spine-label.
