Title from the engraved title-pages to each part. The colophon at the end of both parts reads: 'In Venetia, MDCXV. Per Giorgio Valentino'. Scamozzi's influential work, modelled on earlier publications such as Alberti, Serlio and Vitruvius, was planned in ten books to be published in two volumes, but printing (commenced from the first book of each part based on the dates of the prefaces) was apparently abandoned in late 1615 and the Idea della architettura was issued at the end of the year without books 4--5, 9--10, and with a final explanatory note from 'Lo Stampatore A' Lettori.' Each book has a special letterpress title-page, with the title 'Dell'Idea Della Architettvra Vniversale Di Vincenzo Scamozzi Architetto Veneto, ...'. The pagination is irregular and there are blank leaves (sometimes excised) in Part I, leaves H4 and 2L4; some copies have the etchings placed on the wrong pages. Copy Notes Copy 1: Imperfect; wanting final leaf of Part II 'Lo Stampatore A' Lettori.' and 'Registro ...' of both parts. With the special title-page to Part I, book 1 misbound before the engraved title. Inscribed in the margins with pencil markings and notes in Italian. Front paste-down with an owner's stamp of a pelican on an arrow in a circle. Bookseller's hieroglyphs in pencil at foot of Part II colophon and on rear paste-down.
Copy 2: The two parts bound in two volumes, each with manuscript translations of the text in English: Part I: [16], 193, [2], 194--218, [4], 352 p. (with pp. 241--2 misbound between 236 and 237); Part II: [16], 172, [4], 173--370 p. With a letter to John Britton from J.H. Burn guaranteeing it, upon Mr Gwilt's assertion and [his] own, to be in the handwriting of Inigo Jones pasted in on front paste-down.
Binding Copy 1: C17th sprinkled calf, red morocco spine-label. Bound in one volume.
Copy 2: C17th calf, gilt-tooled spines, red and black spine-labels. Bound as two volumes. Rebacked in calf.
