Serlio was the first Renaissance writer to attempt a coherent, complete practical theory of architecture in a series of separately published volumes amply illustrated with woodcuts. Book 1 was first published in Venice in 1537, book 3 in 1540, books 1--2 in 1545 and book 5 in 1547. The first collected edition was issued in Venice in 1551. The present edition is a reprint of the first collected edition of all five books of Serlio's Architettura issued in Venice in 1551, each book in the present edition probably being published as the previous edition of that book went out of print. The imprint and colophon dates of the present edition are dated 1559--1562 but the notes to BAL 2971 (1551 ed.), p. 1815 suggest that book 4, on the orders, which is undated, may have been issued slightly earlier as being the most popular, suggesting a possible date of 1558. Book 2 has no separate title-leaf but a drop-head title reading 'Il Secondo Libro Di Perspettiva Di Sebastian Serlio Bolognese' and imprint: In Venetia per Gio. Battista, & Marchion Sessa fratelli, 1560. … Con nove additioni, ... in questa terza editione …, and a dedication from Francesco Marcolini to Alvigi Cornaro dated 1559. Book 5 has imprint: In Venetia: appresso Gio. Battista et Marchio Sessa fratelli, and the title reading: Qvinto libro d'architettvra, di Sebastiano Serlio Bolognese. Nel qvale si tratta di diverse forme di tempii sacri ... con nuoua aggiunta delle misure che seruono a tutti gli ordini de componimenti, ...; the colophon is dated 1559. The title-pages are printed in ornamental woodcut frames. See BAL, Early printed books, no. 2971 (1551 ed.), and notes to BAL 2966/39 (p. 1806) which record other complete copies of this edition at All Souls College, Oxford, the National Art Library and Johns Hopkins University.
