Serlio was the first Renaissance writer to attempt a coherent, complete practical theory of architecture in a series of separately published volumes amply illustrated with woodcuts, starting with Book 4, the Regole generali di architettura, Venice 1537. Collected editions began to appear from 1551. The present volume is the first collected edition of the seven books. Included in the foliation are separate title pages within ornamental woodcut borders for each book. The imprint and date appear only on the general title, Libro estraordinario, Il settimo libro and the colophon. Leaves 21--24 are omitted. BAL Early printed books, no. 2973.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting first [24] leaves containing collective title, dedication, sonnets and index. Inscribed in ink on front pastedown R. Adam's Sale/May 1818/2.2.0 (q.v., lot 25; see also Priv. Corr. XVI.E.3.11). Front and back endpapers with pencil sketches by Adam of picturesque landscapes with buildings, similar to those in the landscape section of volume 54 of Adam's drawings. See Fowler [333]. Back endpaper inscribed in pencil Mr Morrison Carpenter [?].

Binding C17th vellum, red-stained gilt-tooled spine-compartment lettered in gilt 'Serlio/ Architett'. Spine lettered in ink '1584'.
