With a separate title-page, foliation and register to each book. The colophon at the end of book 5 reads: 'Translated out of Italian into Dutch, and out of Dutch in English, at the charges of Robert Peake. Printed at London, by Simon Stafford. 1611. B.W.' Dutch title: Den eerste vijfsten boeck van architecture; the Dutch translation from which the English was made was not from the Italian as stated, but from one of Pieter Coecke's Flemish or French editions. The woodcuts for the title-page borders and illustrations were first used in the Antwerp edition of 1553. They were later used in the 1606 edition in Dutch printed in Amsterdam by C. Claeszoon, who also printed them on sheets otherwise blank and shipped them to Basel, where letterpress in German was overprinted in 1608, and to London for the present edition. Thomas Snodham printed only the bifolium following the first title-page (STC addendum). Copy Notes Copy 1: Bought from T. & W. Boone for 16s. on 6 June 1831. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.18). Book II, fol. 24, 25 misbound after fol. 26. Loosely inserted at Book III fol. 62 a drawing of the Entablature of ye Corinthian Order at Portico of ye Rotunda at Rome, in sepia pen and wash with scale and measurements in modules, watermarked C inclosing B. Verso of front free-endpaper inscribed in ink (?)105 and in pencil 17/--. Armorial bookplate, name defaced but with motto 'Pieux quoique Preux' [Long Family?] of [?] on front pastedown-endpaper.
Copy 2: 35.3 cm. Imperfect; wanting bk. III, fol. 28-31 and bk. IV, fol. 47. Purchased at Christie's sale 23 March, 1813 (q.v.) for £1 8s. in lot 110, with copies of 'Leoni's Palladio 2 v. in 1' (q.v.), 'Pricke's Vitruvius' i.e. Mauclerc's New treatise of architecture, according to Vitruvius (q.v.), and 'Leeke's Vignola' (q.v.). Book IV, fol. 27 misbound before fol. 26. Inscribed on front free-endpaper John Soane/ 1813. Marginal annotations in ink by Soane with captions to some of the woodcuts. Front pastedown inscribed in ink s/ 4 Binding.

Binding Copy 1: C18th red morocco, gilt-tooled panels, gilt double-rule borders and gilt-tooled spine, black spine-label.
Copy 2: C18th calf, blind roll-tooled panels, roll-tooled borders, red spine-label.
