The anonymous Letter, written by the portrait painter and later president of the Royal Academy, Martin Archer Shee, is in response to the criticism of painters by the picture dealer, Noel Desenfans in the second edition of his Descriptive catalogue ... of some pictures, 1802 (1st ed., 1801, q.v.; 3rd ed., 1802, q.v.) and his answer to "the complaints of painters" offended by his criticism in a Letter to Benjamin West, 1802 (q.v.).

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink at head of title-page John Soane and under 'A Painter', M.A. Shee R. A. Bound in a collection of pamphlets following the Letter to Benjamin West.

Binding C19th half maroon roan, blind double-rule borders, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-ruled spine, gilt-lettered 'Letter to / B. West P.R.A.'. Numbered '93' in a series of pamphlet volumes.
