The final leaf is blank. Soane's designs for a new House of Lords, which he was requested to make in June 1794 and expected to be executed, came to nothing owing to the economic situation and to James Wyatt's claim to his right as Surveyor-General since 1796 to design any new buildings. See J.M. Crook and M.H. Port, The history of the King's Works, VI (1973), pp. 512--15; see also Gillian Darley, John Soane: an accidental romantic (London 1999), pp. 139--141. This was the first instance of Soane going into print to defend himself against perceived professional slights, a pattern which would recur throughout his life. See Susan Palmer, 'Sir John Soane: rewriting a life', Libraries and the Cultural Record, special issue 'Personal Papers in History' (Austin, 2009), pp. 65--81. Soane's draft manuscript of the Statement is bound with manuscripts pertaining to the Law Courts (Soane Case 29--30). ESTC t101709.
