Jacob Spon was a doctor and archaeologist from Lyon who accompanied Sir George Wheler, author of A journey into Greece, 1682 (q.v.) on his travels in the Levant; Spon's Voyage d'Italie, de Dalmatie, de Grece, et du Levant was published in Lyon, 1678. The Recherches curieuses contain numerous illustrations of coins, inscriptions and other antiquities. The added engraved title-plate is signed 'M. Ogier ... Lugduni' and captioned 'Recherches Cvrievses D'Antiqvité'. Pages 41--48 are omitted from the pagination; register is continuous. BM STC French, 1601--1700, S957.

Copy Notes Bought from J. Britton for 5s. 6d. on 21 December 1816. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.3.3). The printed label of a previous owner, I. A. Aubert, pasted down on the title-page. Engraved scrap loose in volume at p. 299, of a woman crowned with a tower, and a folded scrap of paper as a bookmark between pp. 472--3.

Binding C17th sprinkled sheep, gilt-tooled spine, paper spine-label lettered in ink 'Spon/ Recherches/ curieuse'.
