First published in nine parts from 1798 to 1800 in Paris and Leipzig. Once part publication was complete the French sheets were reissued as a complete volume in Leipzig, 1800, and in 1801 the same sheets apparently issued again in London (q.v.), and in Paris as in the present copy, with a new 'Avertissement' by the publisher. Stieglitz, a Leipzig classicist and architectural historian was the author of the introductory essay, condensed from the first chapter of his Geschichte der Baukunst der Alten (Leipzig, 1796). The plates, numbering 105 in total, consist of an engraved frontispiece, 1 unnumbered plate and 103 plates numbered 1--113 of which eight are double-page with 2 numbers and one is double-page with 3 numbers. Copy Notes Possibly purchased as one of several articles marked in a catalogue of the stock of White, Cochrane & Co., April 1815 (no. 162, and no. 8089, for 6 guineas less 10% discount). Rear pastedown inscribed in pencil 4-4-.

Binding C19th brown paper boards backed in later goatskin (?).
