First published as A description of the gardens of Lord Viscount Cobham, at Stow in Buckinghamshire, Northampton, 1744 (ESTC t68770). See J. Harris, Country house index, 1979, p. 43 and the notes to BAL, Early printed books, no. 2952 (1769 ed.). Soane also owned the octavo 'New Edition' of 1780 (q.v.). The present edition has new plates drawn by Thomas Medland (d. 1833).

Copy Notes Inscribed in pencil on 4th front free-endpaper, in Soane's hand from the Marquess of Buckingham / J. Soane/ Aug. 14 1817. The "Gothic Library" and vestibule at Stowe were built to designs by Soane, 1805--6. See D. Stroud, Sir John Soane architect (London 1984), pp. 191--3.

Binding C19th calf, gilt roll-tool borders, gilt-ruled spine, maroon spine-label. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 4s. 6d., 1 February 1830. (Archive 7/14/36).
