In 1804, shortly after his return from the Continent, Tappen published a Short description of a tour of which the Professional observations is an enlargement. Soane's morceau de reception, "a small design, ... for a hunting-casine, dated October 1779", was noted by Tappen (p. 98) in the architectural chamber of the Florentine Academy. BAL, Early printed books, no. 3233.

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper To / John Soane Esqre. RA / with the Author's / Respectful Compts / 1807. This copy evidently replaced one bought from J. Taylor for 10s. 6d. on 15 August 1806. (Spiers Box). A reprint of the review of the book that appeared in the Monthly Magazine, XXII, p. 369 is tipped in at the front in this copy.
