Parallel titles and text in Danish, French and German. The preface is signed 'Lauritz de Thurah'. The author was the leading Danish architect and architectural writer of his generation and a leading proponent of Baroque architecture; as the title of this work makes clear, he drew inspiration from the Vitruvius Britannicus (q.v.). Copy Notes Volume I inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper 2 vol 6.6.0. Purchased for £3 13s. 6d. per J. Williams at the sale of the library of John Nash, 15--20 July 1835, (q.v.), 4th day, lot 929. (Spiers Box, Purchases through personal friends; Curatorial Papers: Bailey, outsize box 16).

Binding C18th red morocco, gilt triple-rule borders and floral corner-pieces, upper and lower covers with gilt-tooled arms of Henry Fiennes Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle (1720--1794) (stamp 4), the corners with gilt-tooled tulips, gilt-tooled spines with Evans' lot number inscribed in ink on a small paper label at the foot of volume I.
