The preface is signed by Dawson Turner, and dated Yarmouth, 13th August 1820. Most of the plates were drawn in 1817 by John Sell Cotman (1782--1842) whose own Architectural antiquities of Normandy was published in parts from 1820 to 1822 with descriptive text by Dawson Turner (q.v.). The remaining plates were produced by 'M. A. T.' and 'E. T.', i.e. Turner's daughters, Mary Anne and Elizabeth, both of whom were pupils of Cotman. The final printed leaf of volume II of the Soane copy is conjugate to a blank along its fore-edge.

Copy Notes Imperfect; vol. I wanting half-title. Bought from T. & W. Boone for £1 10s. on 10 December 1822, and bound for 16s. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.4.7).

Binding C19th calf, gilt triple-rule borders with small gold-tooled corner ornaments, blind-tooled spines with gilt-tooled compartment centerpieces, red morocco spine-labels. Bound by T. & W. Boone for 16s. at the time of purchase on 10 December 1822. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.4.7).
