Title from the list of Viel's works available from Perronneau on the half-title verso of his Décadence de l'architecture, 1800 (q.v.). Issued here as the final part of a pro tempore compilation of Viel's works up to 1800 in two volumes, one containing his Principes de l'ordonnance et de la construction des batimens; ... Première partie, 1797 (q.v.), and the present volume as described in the entry for Décadence. The present suite consists of 17 folding plates of buildings executed by Viel between 1780 and 1795, as follows: 10 plates of the Salle de Vente and other works at the Mont-de-Piété, engraved by Louis Gustave Taraval (1738--1794), numbered I--X; 3 unnumbered plates engraved by Taraval and Antoine-Joseph Gaitte (b. 1753) of the Hôpital de la Pitié and Hospice of the parish of St Jacques St Philippe du Haut Pas, Paris; and four unnumbered plates by Taraval of the Halle au Blé, Corbeil, the Ferme de Marolles near Poissy, new stairs to the Château de Bellegarde, and a chapel for the parish of St Jacques du Haut Pas. The first plate in the unnumbered sequence, captioned 'Plans De L'Hospice Destiné Aux Malades De La Paroisse De St.-Jacques St. Philippe Du-Haut-Pas. ... Par Charles-François Viel, Architecte ...' is dated 1780 and has imprint: A Paris chez l'auteur, et chez Chereau. These may be the plates referred to in the 'Avant-propos' to the Principes announcing a 'seconde partie' for which many of the plates were already engraved.

Copy Notes The two-volume set was bought at Christie's, 17 February 1815, lot 61. (See marked-up copy of the sale catalogue in Christie's archive).

Binding C19th half red roan, gilt-ruled spine, marbled-paper boards, green spine-label lettered in gilt 'Viel's/ Decadence/ De/ L'Architecture'. Uniform bound with the companion volume (q.v.).
