VIGNOLA, Giacomo Barozzi da (1507--1573)
[Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura. 1582]
Regola delli cinqve ordini d'architettvra di M. Jacomo Barozzio da Vignola.
In Venetia (Place), presso Francesco Ziletti,, 1582.
Engr. t.-pl., [2] p., [30] pl. (numbered IIII--XXXII, 1 unnumbered fold.) ; 38.6 cm. (2°)

The first edition of Vignola's Regola consisted of XXXII plates printed in Rome at the Camera Apostolica and published in 1562 (first and second states). The second edition, with the imprint of the Venetian engraver Bolognino Zaltieri dated 1570, reused the title-plate from his edition, bearing the same date, of Antonio Labacco's Libro ... appartenente all'architettura. After Zaltieri's death or retirement the Labacco plates came into the hands of Girolamo Porro who published the next edition in 1576 (q.v.) and in the following year produced his own copy of the Vignola plates (BAL 3447/4). Zaltieri's Vignola plates seem to have been obtained by Francesco Ziletti and they are reprinted in a later state in the present edition published by Ziletti in 1582, with a new title-plate that has been identified as bearing the device of Zaltieri although no copies have been traced with his imprint, suggesting it may have been prepared by him shortly before he ceased production. See BAL, Early printed books, no. 3447/5 and the notes to 'Series C', pp. 2219-2220. The Soane copy, like the Fowler copy, has the two-page printed description (39 lines recto, 48 lines verso) and folded plan of the ports from Labacco (not included in the above collation) in the place of the printed preface (included in the collation) which is lacking; see Fowler Cat. 352.

Copy Notes Bound (2) with a copy of Antonio Labacco, Libro ... appartenente a l'architettura, Venice 1576 (q.v.), and with the letterpress and folded plan of the ports from Labacco misbound following the title-plate, in the place of the printed preface (included in the collation) which is lacking. The Soane copy additionally has two extraneous plates depicting the Villa Farnese at Caprarola bound at the end: the first is pl. [61] (numbering from the accompanying letterpress description) from vol. V of an unidentified edition of Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg, Civitates orbis terrarum, 6 vols, Cologne 1572--1617/8 (see BAL, Early printed books, no. 364); the second is the 'Ichnografia Generale ...' from Francesco Villamena's edition of Vignola, Rome 1617 (q.v.).

Binding C19th half diced russia, gilt-ruled borders and spine, marbled-paper boards. Bound by Peter Low for 9s., 9 September 1805. (Spiers Box).
