VIGNOLA, Giacomo Barozzi da (1507--1573)
[Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura. ca. 1625--1680?]
Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura di M Jacomo Barozzio Da Vignola. Libro primo, et originale
In Roma (Place), si stampa ... da Gio:Batta de Rossi Milanese,, [ca. 1625--1680?].
Engr. t.-pl., XXXVI pl. ; 41.5 cm. (2°)

Date from BAL 3447/21. The plates of Vignola's Regola delli cinque ordini, first published in 1562, probably continued to be sold after his death in 1573 by his son Giacinto, and after the latter's death the coppers passed to the Roman printer Andrea Vaccario (see BAL 3447/15). Some time later the plates came into the possession of Francesco Villamena, who began to sell copies probably from around 1617 (see BAL 3447/17), in which state the Vignola work is often accompanied by Villamena's Alcune opere d'architettura, 1617 (q.v.). Villamena's stock was evidently acquired after his death in 1624 by Giovanni Battista de' Rossi, who added his undated imprint to the foot of the title-plate and apparently continued to issue copies accompanied by the Villamena plates. The date is generally given as around 1617, probably because copies are often found (as here) bound with copies of Villamena, but it seems likelier that it began to be issued from 1625. The Soane copy is printed on paper with a lamb and flag within double-lined circle similar to Heawood no. 2838. Copies can be found with or without the plate originally numbered 'XXXVII' but with the plate number erased, probably because with the number removed, it fitted equally well with Villamena's companion work. See notes to BAL, Early printed books, no. 3447, particularly pp. 2219, 2222; Fowler Cat. 356.

Copy Notes Bound (1), as issued, with Villamena's Alcune opere d'architettura, 1617 (q.v.). Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper R. Dickens and John Soane/ L.I. Fields, and in pencil in a large hand No: 14.

Binding C17th vellum, spine lettered in ink 'Vignola', with a faded paper library label.

Reference Number 3509

Additional Names Dickens, R.
