VIGNOLA, Giacomo Barozzi da (1507--1573)
[Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura.
45 engr. pl. ; 35.4 cm. (4°)

The approximate date of publication is usually given as ca. 1780--1790, suggested by the dates of Jean-Dominique Etienne Le Canu (1768--1816) who engraved plates 34--45. However BAL 3473 describes an issue with 44 plates, lacking pl. 45 and with different plates numbered 35, 43 and 44, with a later state of the title-plate in which Daumont's imprint has been erased and that of [Jean-Baptiste] Crépy, dated 1781, has been added beneath the title. This suggests an earlier date for the Daumont edition, almost certainly before 1775 when he ceased trading, and the likelihood that the plates were engraved by another individual, perhaps the father of J.D.E.; see BAL, Early printed books, no. 3473 (1781 issue). Fowler Cat. 382.

Copy Notes Bought from Thomas Boone for 6s. on 17 Nov. 1812. (Archive 16/12/45). The title-plate inscribed in ink Le Roux fils with an additional 3 added in ink to the engraved 'Prix 3th' (the latter presumably for one cahier, the larger price for the complete work); the front free-endpaper inscribed in pencil with Boone's hieroglyphs and the price -6s-.

Binding C18th half calf, gilt double-rule spine, green leather spine-label, marbled-paper boards.

Reference Number 3514

Additional Names Thomas Boone; Delagardette, Claude Mathieu (1762--1805)
