The first English edition was published in 1721; Soane also owned editions in French (q.v.) and Italian (q.v.). The portrait is engraved by 'I. Milton'. ESTC t118768.

Copy Notes Copy 1: Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper John Soane/1804. Inscribed in ink on title-page Jas. Malton. With Malton's marginal markings in pencil and a note in ink on p. 49 referring to history painting.
Copy 2: 21.0 cm. With a small sheet of paper containing pen and ink sketches of a portrait in a medallion and an apse inscribed Light & Shade on/ Da Vinci's/ principles loosely inserted at p. 111.

Binding Copy 1: Contemporary tree calf, gilt-tooled spine, black morocco spine-label.
Copy 2: Late C18th century mottled and stained calf, gilt-rule borders, gilt-tooled spine with small sunbursts, black morocco spine-label.
