This abridgement is by Claude Perrault (1613--1688) and is based on his complete translation first published in 1673 (second edition 1684, q.v.). He is named however only in the privilege on the final page. In this copy as in the Library of Congress one, the conjugate fol. X2-3 are mounted on a stub. Perrault's translation included a commentary that raised considerable controversy, which spilled over into the lengthy preface to his Ordonnance des cinq espèces de colonnes, Paris 1683 (q.v.).
