This is the first French translation of the complete text. It has 160 woodcut illustrations printed in the text, from 158 blocks cut and, in some cases designed, by Jean Goujon (see leaves 2D3a--5a). The colophon reads 'Fin Des Annotations Svr Vitrvve: Imprimées a Paris, pour la Veuue & Heritiers de Ian Barbé. 1547'. Leaf 2C6 and the final leaf 2D6 are blanks. Copy Notes The title-page is inscribed in ink John Soane, Aug: 1805. This copy was bought from the architectural bookseller and publisher Josiah Taylor for 10s. on 27 August 1805. (Spiers Box). With leaf 2C6 and the final blank leaf (2D6) present, the latter inscribed on the verso in brown ink Anno dni 1583. The passage relating to planetary orbits on fol. 125v is inscribed in black ink with near contemporary marginalia. The alphabetical 'Annotations sur Vitruve' inscribed in brown ink by a later hand giving folio references to the text. The front pastedown is inscribed in brown ink, the lower part obscured by Soane's bookplate, Francers [or Françoys?] a luy apartient celiure and the front free-endpaper in pencil This and D'Avilers Archit £1=12=-, with later price and pressmark pencilled in alongside, above a pen-and-ink drawing of fretwork.
Binding C16th calf rebacked in 19th century, upper and lower covers gilt-stamped with dragon-slayer device (bookseller's stamp?) and floral corner motifs, inner and outer blind-ruled borders, and slots for ties (missing).
