The second, heavily revised edition of Claude Perrault's translation. The first, which is not present in Soane's library, had appeared in 1673 under the patronage of Louis XIV. The 67 engraved illustrations are numbered I--LXV with 2 bis numbers. BAL, Early printed books, no. 3513; Hooked on Books 2.1.

Copy Notes Bought for £1 11s. 6d. on 18 February 1783. (SNB I, 1781--4). Some vocabulary notes by Soane in pencil in the preface. Booskeller's codes in ink on rear pastedown. With the owner's stamp in red ink of 'Anty * Merry' at the head and foot of the title-page, possibly the Anthony Merry (1756--1835) who served as British Ambassador in Washington during Jefferson's presidency; or perhaps of his father, a wine merchant of St Mary Abchurch who married Susannah Chitty at Christ's Church, Greyfriars in June 1752.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-tooled spine.
