40, 39--124, CXXV--CXXVIII, 125--134, 133bis, 133ter, 134--156, 156--157, 167--169, 160--274, [18] p. : wdcut illus. ; 40.1 cm. (2º)

First edition of the translation and commentary by Daniele Barbaro, with the assistance of Andrea Palladio. The woodcuts are partly attributed to Palladio and to Giuseppe Porta, known as Salviati; for a detailed analysis including details of the plates, collation and attribution, see the notes to the BAL catalogue entry. The collation of the work is complex due to the need to print double-page woodcuts on single sheets and there are three pages numbered 133. In all copies traced the woodcut plans on p. 72 (sig. E8v) and p. 85 (sig. F7r) have been cancelled with new woodcuts pasted over. The Fowler copy additionally has such a cancel on p. 21 (sig. B3r), apparently due to the wrong image being printed and corrected by cancelling the bifolium B3.4 at an early stage; in the Soane copy the new leaf B3 is tipped onto the uncancelled original bifolium which can be identified by the conjugate leaf B4v reading 'saranno ... situati' in line 36 where the cancellans reads 'sarà ... situato'. There are paper extensions pasted to pp. 69, 71, 78, CXXV, and CXXVII (sig. E7r, E8r, F3v, 'Iiiii'r, 'Iv'r and an overlay on p. 39 (sig. C6r); p. 228 (sig. Q2v) has an overlay with a revolving pointer; pp. [288] and [289] (sig. V2v and V3r) have volvelles. BAL, Early printed books, no. 3522; Fowler 407; Millard IV, 160.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the volvelles on pp. [288--289]. Pages 123--124 (sig. 'Iiiii') misbound after p. CXXVIII. One of Soane's two editions of Barbaro's Vitruvius (the present volume or the copy of the abridged 1747 edition, q.v.) was bought for 12s. from J. Taylor on 27 August 1805. (Spiers Box, Taylor, Priestley & Weale).

Binding C18th half sheep, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-ruled spine, black morocco spine-label.

Reference Number 3532

Additional Names Josiah Taylor; Palladio, Andrea (1508--1580). Fabbriche antiche'; Barbaro, Daniele (1514--1570); Salviati, Giuseppe (c.$1520--c.$1575)
