Originally published serially in 80 numbers between 1755 and 1757 with a title-page dated 1756 (q.v.). The plates and unsold stock of the first edition were sold to J. Rivington after Osborne's death in 1767, and copies were issued containing a new edition of numbers I--X and a new title-page dated 1767; by spring 1768 the whole work was being reissued in weekly parts and with a new title-page dated 1768 as here, the plates being reprinted with new numbering as regularly as was consistent with references to the plate numbers in the letterpress, and the letterpress being a mixture of reissued and reprinted sheets.
