Ware, Isaac (1704--1766)
[Designs of Inigo Jones and others. 1731]
Designs of Inigo Jones and others published by I:Ware.
London (Place), [1731].
[8] engr. p., 53 [i.e. 48] engr. pl. (5 double with 2 numbers each) ; 23.8 cm. (8º)

Engraved notice on verso of title-page. Publication of the first edition was announced in the Daily Advertiser, 22 February 1731. The present work was clearly aimed at a wider public than the more expensive folio edition of Designs of Inigo Jones published by William Kent in 1727 (q.v.). The original drawings for this book, plus three that were not published, were sent to Soane on 6 March 1820 by the bookseller John Weale, according to whom it 'has been seen by Mr Jos. Gwilt and he says that it blonged to the Burlington Library'. See Concise Catalogue of Drawings, Vol. 112; Weale's letter is reproduced in A.T. Bolton (ed.), The portrait of Sir John Soane, R.A. (London 1927), pp. 359-60. Fourdrinier's engravings are extremely faithful reversed copies of Ware's pen & wash drawings, all of which show physical evidence on their versos of having been transferred directly to copperplates, probably in a rolling-press. BAL, Early printed books, no. 1622; Harris and Savage, no. 909; ESTC t116217 (giving date as 1733).
