First published in 1800. A compilation of writings on Gothic architecture brought together by the publisher, Josiah Taylor, including Thomas Warton's essay, 'Observations on the Fairy Queen of Spencer', 1762; 'Historical Remarks on the Saxon Churches' from James Bentham's History and antiquities of the ... cathedral church of Ely, 1771 (q.v.); the preface to Francis Grose's Antiquities of England, 1773--87 (q.v.); and 'On the Rise and Progress of the Pointed Arch' from Milner's History and survey of the Antiquities of Winchester, vol. II, 1798 (q.v.). This 'second edition' is really a later issue of the true second edition which was published in 1800. (see notes to BAL Early printed books, no. 1001) with the addition of 'A List Of The Cathedrals Of England ; Shewing Their Principal Dimensions', pp. [135]--154, with divisional title-leaf dated 1802 and also issued separately in the same year. Copy Notes Lacking the final advertisement leaf found in some copies. Inscribed in pencil with a few marginal notes and some passages underlined, and a reference to Sir C. Wren p. XVI on the front free-endpaper.

Binding C19th tree calf, gilt double-rule spine, red morocco spine-label. This is probably the 'Essays on Gothic Architecture Royal 8vo. Do [i.e. calf Gilt]' bound by Peter Low for 2s. 10d., 17 April 1807. (Spiers Box).
